.....home made standard gearbox Hewland four-speed gear group. Bill Meade and RS-designer of Ford racing parts, focused on a number of fast engines. All this just as a precursor to the Group 2 project on which this article.

A project, after the approval of the Ford Fiesta in 1600 (for the U.S. market) on May 1, 1977 could begin. Beginning in 1978 was John Griffiths - Weslake a former designer and now works at Ford Boreham - Ford Fiesta commissioned a group of 2 to conceive based on the 1977 homologated parts. Inter alia Len Bailey and Mike Hewland hired as it were, in order to accompany certain subprojects. Hewland had a suitable mechanical self-locking differential designs to complement the already applied to the satisfaction four gearbox with custom gear sets. Bailey sat down with the suspension, but still questioned whether he and his balky Fiesta differential characteristic is as fine as could be sent. So he wondered what the people of Ferguson for the Fiesta project might mean. Ferguson? Indeed, the specialists from Coventry previously a four wheel drive rally cross Capri built. Bill Meade Boreham and other specialists with experience in special Capri's proved now that the missing links in the chain. Because they knew the problems and characteristics of the hydraulic (instead of mechanical) from the differential between Capri and saw that a perfect system slip differential.

Because hydraulic differential was true that some smooth and refined steering characteristics of the Fiesta as possible without excessive driving reactions in the controls. The core of the whole matter is a fluid-filled and hermetically sealed drum which two shafts are attached. At least, one is permanently linked to the drum, while the other is free to rotate and is - as the drums themselves - a system connected to friction plate with axial holes drilled, and a narrow slit between the plates. The panels rotate in a silicone fluid - as soon as the two shafts and thus record systems differing speeds run - build a strong resistance. Under normal circumstances, this differential a return of 85%. "You could almost compare it with a torque converter type," says Meade on the system, but not on asphalt while riding on paved roads, the best justice to. Once a wheel is slipping through the differential, only very gradually and with a progressive increase in sparrowhawk king.

Experience with Escort

While Roger Clark in September last year to test the transmission of work began, prepareerde Mau-rice Gomm Woking in the body, as he did earlier with the Escorts. Carefully he charged the three-door by coach-and-through, but instead of the old Escort schokdem-perhuizen remained in the body similar to the standard ones. Together with a reaction to the rigid shaft mounted dampers take the long part of the side elmo-ment of the axis. However, you should not think that the inventiveness of the Ford Fiesta in the Boreham-people project was lost. Take the aluminum wheel tubs and the 16-point rollcage, which begins on top of the shock absorber housing and runs on both sides of the interior through the central body style (the B-post) until past the windshield pillars in the dashboard. In the future, perhaps Ford's cage to the front shock absorber suspension points to come. Cross over the driver and passenger is the cross bracket, and the whole is securely bolted to the underbody. The problems began within only good when the 55 liter fuel tank had to be made in the compact body, flanked on either side by many petrol and oil pumps and dry sump oil tank. To meet the safety requirements had even half (Perspex) rear are fitted above the rear! Initially we also played with the idea of the tank near the rear to make, but something (with all benefits in respect of weight) is still in the future.

Tests on unpaved roads showed the need for a strengthened engine mount to. Again, experience with Escorts - gained during the World Cup rally - useful. A two-piece crossbar bear part in the Silent engine, with an additional reaction between the body and the clutch housing of the transmission. "That facility was much needed, because if the engine could move that would adversely affect the handling and the kinetic.....
