News Release - Ford Fiesta Research Unit to Investigate Motorcycle Accidents

For the last two months a Ford Fiesta 1.1 L has been on twenty-four hour emergency call from Scotland Yard. Specifically equipped to deal with and investigate motorcycle accidents, this very special vehicle is fitted with emergency sirens and bells, all manner of auxiliary lights, six radios, mobile X-ray and photographic equipment, tools, a first-aid kit, accident reconstruction and friction measuring materials, water, etc.

Tuned in to police wave-bands, "Oscar London" (the vehicle's call sign) is among the first on the scene of accidents and has already covered ten thousand miles on its way to hundreds of incidents within the metropolitan area.

So far it has only been on secret trial. However, as from November 29 it will adopt a key role in a three month investigation into motorcycle accidents by the London Hospital Medical College's department of Forensic Medicine. By attending up to four incidents per day it will provide the vital first-hand evidence required to complement the laboratory work of Professor Cameron (leading pathologist and Chairman of the Academy of Forensic Science) and his team which includes Professor Watkins, the world famous neurosurgeon. The field work will be co-ordinated by Dr Tom Ravensdale.

On November 29 the team will take their Fiesta to Buckingham Palace for the project to receive the official blessing of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It will then be driven to the London Hospital Medical College where Mrs Margaret Thatcher and the assistant commissioner and commanders of London's traffic control will meet to launch the project.

The scheme is a pilot one to examine the correlation between head injuries and helmet design with the aim of reducing both the number and severity of the injuries. It is hoped that the project will lead to a major and very necessary programme on helmets generally, i.e. sports, industrial, etc.

The Ford Fiesta being used is, apart from a heavy-duty battery, a perfectly standard 1.1 L. Despite carrying many hundredweights of special equipment, and being constantly rushed to and from the scene of major and minor accidents (the vehicle is on twenty-four hour call), the hospital report it to have been "100 per cent reliable". A police spokesman said, "I wish all our vehicles were as dependable as this one.
