Care must be taken not to press the accelerator pedal when starting from cold as this interferes with the automatic choke and makes the engine extremely reluctant to fire-up. Left to its own devices, however, the automatic choke works well and warm-up, while a little prolonged, is trouble-free. The Fiesta's lively feel can be attributed, in part, to its engine's eager response to small throttle openings, but it's not until the Weber's second choke is opened that it really moves along. While not particularly free-revving, the engine spins willingly to 6000 rpm and up to 5500 rpm, at least, is substantially free from tiring boom periods and mechanical thrash. So, despite the low gearing, the engine is sufficiently refined to make motorway cruising between 70 and 90 mph tolerable, if not relaxed.

Accepting that the Fiesta's performance was exploited to the full, its overall consumption of 27.9 mpg is by no means poor though we should bear in mind that the substantially quicker VW Golf GTi returned 27.4 mpg and the standard Fiesta 1.3 S 31.0 mpg under conditions of similarly hard driving.
